Preselected Urban and Architectural Competition / 2nd Prize

The redevelopment of the former American settlement along Neuherbergstraße and Rockefellerstraße transforms a 19-hectare site in northern Munich into a diverse and climate-resilient residential quarter. Building on the spatial traces of the existing structures, preserved buildings, mature landscapes and new housing form a coherent urban fabric. L-shaped and linear new buildings follow the scale and orientation of the existing, creating an open comb structure with protected green courtyards. This clear layout enables careful densification with around 1,500 dwellings alongside daycare, local amenities and community facilities. The architecture is based on efficient, flexible housing with clearly organised floor plans and open pergola access. New and existing structures form quiet residential environments while a permeable network of paths and shared spaces connects the neighbourhood to the surrounding landscape. A continuous green corridor links Panzerwiese, the quarter and Dientzenhoferstraße Park, establishing the ecological backbone. Climate-resilient planting, rainwater management and a district-wide energy system support the transformation into a sustainable and socially mixed neighbourhood with a strong and evolving identity.
