Christoph is an architect, designer and founder of A KIND OF SPACE, an office for architecture, research and design based in Berlin. Established in 2024, the practice builds on his long-standing engagement with complex cultural and urban projects and on the conviction that architecture should begin with a careful understanding of what is already there. He is particularly interested in projects where spatial, social, historical, climatic and economic conditions overlap, and where existing structures, resources and ways of inhabiting can become the starting point for transformation. For Christoph, architecture is a collaborative practice grounded in dialogue, curiosity and care.
From 1999 to 2024 he worked at David Chipperfield Architects, the Pritzker Prize-winning practice, in London and Berlin, latterly as Managing Director, Design Director and Partner. Over twenty-five years he contributed to the design and delivery of complex projects at many scales, from the earliest concept through to construction, working closely with clients, institutions, cities and interdisciplinary teams. Key projects include Morland Mixite Capitale in Paris, the Amorepacific headquarters in Seoul, the extension of Kunsthaus Zurich, and the masterplan for Museum Island Berlin with the initial concept for the James Simon Gallery. This experience continues to inform his work at A KIND OF SPACE, particularly in the transformation of existing buildings, cultural projects and complex urban situations.
Before studying architecture at the Architectural Association in London, Christoph trained as a carpenter in the Black Forest and studied product and furniture design at Central Saint Martins. This background continues to shape his interest in material, construction, use and the relationship between architecture and the human scale. He has taught at the Architectural Association, served as an external examiner at London Metropolitan University, and regularly lectures, acts as a critic and competition juror, and is a member of the Design Advisory Board of the City of Pforzheim.
