The new Architecture and Design Museum in Helsinki is conceived as a civic place that encourages dialogue about the role of architecture and design in shaping an open and inclusive society. Located at the edge of the historic waterfront, the museum brings together two existing institutions under one roof and forms a new cultural destination within the urban fabric of the city. The starting point of the design is the archetype of the Finnish Lato, a traditional storage hut that symbolises protection, memory and belonging. This idea is translated into a distinctive pitched roof lifted above the site, creating a recognisable architectural presence while establishing a generous sheltered public space beneath.
The building treats all sides equally and opens itself towards the surrounding streets, park and harbour, strengthening its role as an urban mediator. Beneath the semi-transparent roof, staggered floors form a sequence of terraces and exhibition spaces filled with northern daylight and views across the city. At the centre of the building, a large atrium organises circulation and connects galleries, workshops, learning spaces and public amenities into a coherent spatial experience. A new public square to the north and landscaped areas along the waterfront extend the museum’s activities into the city and reinforce its role as a civic meeting place. In this way, the museum becomes both a cultural institution and an open urban landscape that brings together architecture, design and everyday life.
