For the Bundesanstalt für Immobilienaufgaben, we are delighted to have received second prize, together with BIOS ATELIER from Brussels and Drees & Sommer from Berlin, for our proposal to transform the former US Army housing estate in Munich into a climate-resilient and future-ready neighbourhood. Building on retained footprints, orientations and landscape patterns, the design introduces new L-shaped buildings and linear replacement blocks that form an open comb-like structure with green courtyards, permeable paths and balanced density. Three high points create orientation and new addresses within the district. These are embedded in a continuous landscape system that links the Panzerwiese nature reserve with the neighbourhood and surrounding parks. Preserved trees, new planting, green roofs and integrated water management establish a robust sponge-city strategy that strengthens cooling, water retention and biodiversity. In the northern sub-area, a fully developed architectural scheme proposes efficient building depths, a wide mix of dwellings and flexible layouts accessed via open galleries, alongside integrated mobility concepts and largely car-free open spaces. Low-carbon energy systems and high environmental standards support everyday life while delivering urgently needed affordable housing in Munich. The project comprises around 1,500 homes, childcare facilities, local amenities and shared spaces, balancing continuity and transformation. We thank all collaborators for a wonderful and inspiring partnership.
