A KIND OF SPACE is an interdisciplinary practice for architecture, research and design based in Berlin, founded in 2024. Building on decades of international experience while exploring new forms of collaboration, authorship and practice, we work with public institutions, foundations, cultural organisations, family-led companies and long-term partners on projects across architectural and urban scales.

We are most valuable in the early stages of a project, when ideas, ambitions and responsibilities first take form. At this moment, objectives are still being defined, existing conditions understood and future possibilities explored. By combining strategic thinking, architectural expertise and cultural insight, we help clients navigate complexity, align ambitions and make informed decisions before major commitments are made. In doing so, we establish clear foundations for what follows.

What We Do
A KIND OF SPACE focuses on concept development, preliminary design, design development and strategic consultancy across architectural and urban scales. The scope of work includes early-stage concepts, feasibility studies, programme development, preliminary design, design development and planning applications.

In the German context, this generally corresponds to HOAI Phases 1–4, supplemented by selected contributions to Phase 5 and artistic site supervision during construction. While maintaining a primary focus on strategy and design, the practice contributes key architectural and urban design decisions through to implementation.

Collective Practice
A KIND OF SPACE emerged from a desire to rethink how architecture is conceived, authored and realised today. Rather than following the model of the singular author, the practice operates as a collaborative framework that brings together different perspectives, experiences and forms of knowledge. Good projects emerge through conversation, curiosity and exchange. The name A KIND OF SPACE describes an approach rather than a fixed authorship. It acts as an umbrella for collective production, shaped by the people involved and their individual perspectives. This idea is reflected in the visual identity of the practice. The handwritten name appears in different versions contributed by members of the team. As one of the most personal forms of expression, handwriting introduces individual character into a shared framework, making visible the relationship between collective authorship and singular voices.

The same principle informs the organisational structure of the practice, which is designed to enable long-term participation, shared responsibility and meaningful collaboration across disciplines.

How We Think
Every project begins with what is already there. Existing structures, material resources and cultural memory are understood as opportunities rather than constraints. Reuse and transformation guide the process, allowing continuity and change to coexist. Materials are approached with care and curiosity, informed by local knowledge, craft traditions and an acceptance of imperfection as part of both making and beauty itself.

We are interested in architecture that grows from its context and responds carefully to the people who use it. Places should feel generous rather than imposing, familiar without being nostalgic, and capable of adapting to changing needs over time. Beauty matters. Not as something exceptional, but as something that can be part of everyday life.

Experience and Outlook
A KIND OF SPACE builds on the experience of its founder. Before establishing the practice, Christoph Felger spent more than two decades at David Chipperfield Architects in London and Berlin, the Pritzker Prize-winning practice, where he served as Partner and Design Director. During this time, he contributed significantly to the development and international profile of the office and played a leading role in projects including Museum Island Berlin, Amorepacific Headquarters in Seoul, the extension of Kunsthaus Zürich and Morland Mixité Capitale in Paris. This body of work reflects a long-standing engagement with cultural institutions, large-scale transformations and complex urban contexts.

Conceived as an evolving platform, A KIND OF SPACE remains open to collaboration, new perspectives and continuous development. The practice is interested in creating spaces that respect what already exists while remaining open to change. Spaces that support everyday life, leave room for appropriation and adaptation, and are generous enough to be used in ways we never anticipated.
